How to Change Keyboard Layout on Mac Devices

Most of us like to use QWERTY keyboard layout because of its popularity. However, it does not mean this input source fits into everyone’s needs when customization gets the need of the hour.

MacOS supports tons of languages and it also accepts input sources. So, based on your preference, you can then change the keyboard layout in order to type faster in your language. Whether you want to type comfortably in French, there is always a suitable layout for you. We’ll walk you through the quick steps in this post.

How to Change Default Keyboard Layout on Mac

Step 1: Open System Preferences on your Mac device

Step 2: Next, click on Keyboard section

Step 3: On the next screen, click on “Input Sources tab” option and click on the “+” button which is located at the bottom left.

Step 4: Now, choose your preferred language from the left side. You will then see the matching keyboard layout options on the right side.

For example, if your preferred language is Dutch, there will be two options: Belgian and Dutch inputs on the right. Simply select the preferred layout and click Add.

You can now see the layout that you have just added.

One thing you should note is that you can add as many languages and the available layouts as your liking. When being directed to the next screen, you need to make the keyboard layout automatically switch to a document’s input.  Simply check out the option at the bottom.

Apart from that, you should check the box for Show input menu. It will help to switch between multiple input options more quickly. When you are done, close the window.

Step 1: First, check out the input menu at the top right and click on it

Step 2: Now, you will see your selected keyboard layouts. Pick up one that you want to use, and you are done!

Step 1. Navigate to System Preferences → Keyboard → Input Sources tab.

Step 2: Now, choose the input source you want to delete and click on the “-“ button at the bottom left of the screen.
