To surf the internet, you usually use Wi-Fi and cellular data on your iPhone XR. Wi-Fi is usually the most widely used method since it’s more stable when compared with cellular data. But you cannot use it if you’re on the go.

The question here is what happens if the cellular data on your iPhone is not working anymore?

There are things you can try to troubleshoot the cellular data that’s not working on your iPhone XR. In this post, we’ll walk you through solutions to fix the problem. It’s not the first time this problem occurs, so there is a couple of procedures we’d like to share with you. Reading this post can help you one way or another.

Here are the things you should do if the cellular data on your iPhone XR is no longer working.

  1. Reboot your iPhone XR
  2. Toggle Cellular Data off and on again
  3. Enable/Disable Airplane Mode
  4. Reset network settings
  5. Factory reset your iPhone XR

Now, let us explain why you have to do these things.

Reboot your iPhone XR

If you have been using the cellular data on your iPhone for a long time, there’s a chance that a minor firmware glitch or issue is the main cause. In this case, a reboot can be a good solution to fix it since the process will refresh your iPhone XR’s memory. To get it done:

  1. Press and hold both the Power button along with one of two Volume buttons for a few seconds.
  2. Release both of them when you see the Slide to Power Off icon. This will turn off the phone.
  3. After 1 minute, press and hold the Power button again until it restarts.
  4. When prompted, enter your passcode to access the Home screen. You can then start using your iPhone again.

If necessary, you can also perform a force restart, which is more effective in solving minor software-related issues. To do so:

  1. Quick press then release the Volume Up button.
  2. Do the same with the Volume Down button.
  3. Then press and hold the Power button and go it of when the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Toggle Cellular Data off and on again

The next solution you should try if a reboot or forced restart didn’t help to fix the problem is toggling the cellular data switch off and enabling it on. Despite being simple, it’s one of the most effective solutions. What it does is refreshing the service on your iPhone behind the cellular data function.

  1. Open Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to and tap on Cellular.
  3. Tap the Cellular Data switch to enable it. If it’s already turned on but it still doesn’t work, then toggle the Cellular Data switch off for a few seconds and re-enable it.

Enable/Disable Airplane Mode

Although the Airplane mode is an old trick, it’s still effective in fixing various types of problems relating to networks. This trick will give the cellular data function a quick reboot and eliminate minor glitches. Here’s how to get it done

  1. From your iPhone Home screen, head to Settings-> Airplane Mode.
  2. Toggle the Airplane Mode switch to enable.
  3. Restart your iPhone XR.
  4. After it restarts, navigate back to Settings-> Airplane Mode and toggle the switch to disable Airplane mode off.

Reset network settings

If all the prior solutions fail, you should think about resetting the network settings on your phone. The reset can fix all possible issues related to networking and internet connectivity like the APN. If you bought your iPhone XR from a service provider as part of the plan, then this procedure can address the problem.

  1. From the Home screen, tap on Settings.
  2. Tap on General > Reset.
  3. Choose Reset Network Settings option
  4. When prompted, enter your phone passcode.
  5. Tap on the popup to confirm network settings reset.

Your iPhone XR will restart automatically and load up the default network options. To bring them back online, just set up and check if the cellular data problem is already gone.

Factory reset your iPhone XR

The last resort you should do if the problem still persists after trying all the above methods is performing a factory reset. The process will erase everything from your iPhone such as contacts, installed apps, personal settings and other data stored on the storage. Any complex system problems will also be fixed during the process. But, before proceeding, you first back up all your important files using iCloud or iTunes so that you can recover them later. Once you’re all set, you can factory reset your iPhone from the settings menu. Here’s how to do so:

  1. Open Settings app from the Home screen.
  2. Tap on General > Reset.
  3. Select Erase all content and settings section
  4. Enter your device passcode when asked.
  5. Tap on the popup to confirm a full factory reset.

All you need now is to follow the onscreen instructions to complete resetting. After the reset is done, your iPhone will reboot by itself. When your iPhone boots up, complete the setup wizard and set up it as new.

Most software issues can be addressed by performing a factory reset, so the cellular data will be working properly on your iPhone XR again. If it’s still not, then the problem might come from your network provider. At this point, you should contact them for further assistance.
