With iOS 10, Apple has taken its mapping service to a whole new level. Aside from the third-party integration, Apple Maps now allows you to avoid toll roads or highways by offering alternative directions. In reality, avoiding toll roads is not new, as it has been around for a while in a third-party navigation app like Google Maps.

Apple Maps and Google Maps offer different ways to avoid being stranded on a toll road. In this post, we will show you how to avoid toll roads when getting directions from Apple and Google Maps.
- How to avoid toll roads in Google Maps
Step one: First and foremost, you need to download and install Google Maps from the App Store.
Step two: Once you are done, launch the app on your iPhone and search for your destination
Step three: Tap on the Route button. After that, enter your “from” and “to” address, or you can use your current location
Step four: Next up, tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Route Options
Step five: Toggle on the switch next to “ Avoid tolls”. Once you are done, return to the map and start getting directions

There are two ways you can avoid toll roads in Apple Maps and we will cover both methods
Steps to enable toll avoidance from the Settings app
Step one: Open the Settings app from your home screen. After that, scroll down to Maps and tap on it to proceed
Step two: Next up, you are supposed to select Driving & Navigation.
Step three: Once you are in the Driving & Navigation preference pane, all you have to do is to turn on the Tolls toggle switch.
Once you are done, Apple Maps will offer alternative roads without tolls. You now can go to your desired destination without stopping to spend your money at toll booths
Steps to avoid toll roads from the Maps app
Another way to avoid toll roads while getting directions from the Maps app will be found within the app. You can use the steps below to do this:
Step one: Launch the Maps app on your iPhone, fill in the “from” and “to” space and start getting directions
Step two: Once you are done, the overview of your road trip will show up, all you have to do now is to pull up from the bottom of the screen the new menu where you need to tap on the blue Driving Options button.
Step three: Next up, turn on the Tolls switch if you want to avoid toll roads when getting directions from Apple Maps
Step four: Tap Done once you are done, and Apple Maps will automatically offer a route without tolls.
Step five: Once you are satisfied with your new direction, tap Go to start navigating.
That’s it! Nothing is worse than stopping and spending your money at toll booths. Luckily, Apple has solved the problem, making your road trip even faster and cheaper.
