How to fix an iPhone that cannot send text messages

  1. Check your network

Before doing anything, make sure that you are now connected to a network. If your iPhone is not connected to a carrier’s cellular network, you cannot send and receive text messages as well as make a phone call. To check if you are now connected to a network, simply look in the top left corner of your device’s screen. If nothing is there, that means that you are not connected.

To get your cellular network working on your iPhone, it’s best to reset your connection. To do this, bring up Control Center on your iPhone by swiping up from the bottom of the screen > turn on Airplane mode > turn it back off (wait for a couple of seconds) > close Control Center.

  1. Reboot your iPhone

Rebooting your iPhone may help you fix some minor problems like app crashes, unresponsive screen or frozen keyboard. In this case, perform a reboot may do the trick. If you now own an iPhone 6 or newer, the method used to restart your device is slightly different.

Step one: First off, you need to hold down the Sleep/Wake button on the right side of the iPhone 6 or newer. Keep holding the button until you see the power-off screen

Step two: Move the slider from left to right to shut down your iPhone. Wait for a couple of seconds and turn your iPhone back on.

  1. Make sure that you have already turned on MMS and Group Messaging

If you cannot send photos or videos, or your iPhone fails to send text messages to a group of people, there is a good chance that you have disabled these features. To turn them on, head to Settings > Messages and turn on the switches for MMS and Group Messaging. Once you are done, launch the Messages app and try re-sending your messages. If the problem still persists, read on.

Step one: First off, launch the Settings app from your home screen. Scroll down a little bit and tap General to proceed

Step two: Once you are in, tap Date & Time and then turn on the switch for Set Automatically.

If the problem is still present, there is a good chance that you are having issues with software. To fix the issue, you simply need to update your iPhone. Keep in mind that a software update always comes with bug fixes and performance enhancements, so make sure that your iPhone is up to date.
