How to format your external hard drive
To make a clone of your Mac, you first need to format your external hard drive. This makes sure that you have enough space to store everything on your computer. The process is simple and does not require any additional program or software.
Step one: First off, connect your external hard drive into your computer and then open the Utility app
Step two: When you are in, select your hard drive under the External section and then hit the Erase tab at the top
Step three: Give the hard drive a name and then select macOS Extended from the list
Step four: Now just simply click on Erase and then hit Done to complete the task.
How to clone your Mac
Once you have successfully erased your external hard drive, you now can use it to keep everything on your Mac. We are going to use SuperDuper to make a clone of your Mac. Before proceeding, make sure that you now have a modern version of macOS.
Step one: Head over to this link and download SuperDuper (this is a free trial)
Step two: Once you are done, open it on your computer and then select your Mac’s hard drive you wish to clone
Step three: Select your external hard drive and hit Copy Now button (you may be asked to enter your admin password to authorize your action)
Step four: Hit Ok to complete the task.
How to restore your Mac from a clone
Step one: Power off your Mac and then connect your external hard drive to your Mac
Step two: Turn your Mac back on and then put your Mac into Recovery Mode (Hold down the Command and R keys)
Step three: When the macOS Utilities screen shows up, hit Disk Utility and select Continue
Step four: Once you are done, select your hard drive and then click on the restore tab
Step five: From the Restore from section, select your external hard drive. After that, make sure you select your Mac’s hard drive from the Restore to section
Step six: Hit the Restore button.
